Since December 2014 the PEGIDA Movement holds their demonstrations on a monday on the Newmarket-Square in Dresden. PEGIDA means: patriotic europeans against the islamification of the western world. As you can imagine its a rather rightwing, patriotic and conservative ideology that rules amongst the participants. But the freedom of speech and the right to demonstrate under consideration of the law is a valuable right, here in Germany. I thought to my self, lets see and experience the demo with your own eyes and try to keep a professional distance in order to just document the happening. I kept one position with my camera and did just document what happened in that frame. What I can not show in the photograph, is the feeling that overpowered me during the whole time. It was a mixture out of sheer fear and the lack of understanding these people. The amount of factless propaganda and baiting against politicians, religious groups and actually everybody who has a different opinion, than the PEGIDA one, was to much. I was not aware that in 2017 there a still so many people able to repeat one of the darkest practices we had in german history.
I felt ashamed being there!
